There is nothing like Virginia weather, where you can experience all four seasons in the span of one week. It can be snowing today, and expected to be in the 70s tomorrow, and then drop down to the 30s overnight. We, Virginia residents, are all used to this crazy weather, but have you ever taken the time to consider if your plumbing pipes can handle it? It is common for our pipes to begin to leak due to the rise and fall of the temperature; therefore, it is extremely important that, as a homeowner or even a renter, you know where your main water shut-off valve is and make sure it works. I know it becomes one more thing you have to be aware of as a homeowner, but this simple bit of knowledge and maintenance can save you a lot of time, money, and headache in the long run. Once you find your main valve, which is usually in a utility closet, under the kitchen sink, or in the garage, you should test it by shutting it off and making sure that the water stops flowing. But, this isn’t the end. Once this is done, you should test all of your secondary valves, which are located throughout your home, to make sure those work too. Knowing where your secondary valves are means that if you do come across a leak, you can isolate it by turning that one valve off too, therefore preventing a greater chance of damage to the rest of the house.
